AUCTUS EXPANDS RAIL APPRENTICE PROGRAMME

New traineeship programme planned for 2015

Birmingham-based Auctus Management Group has expanded its rail apprenticeship programme with 12 new recruits. The new influx of apprentices, all recruited from the Birmingham area, are already hard at work gaining on-site experience with Amey Colas High Output Track Renewals, a major client of Auctus.

The latest intake brings the total number of rail apprentices employed by Auctus Apprentice Training Agency, part of Auctus Management Group, up to 33. The programme supports all of the apprentices to achieve either a Level 2 or Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in railway engineering or track maintenance, which includes at least 30 hours per week on-site. In addition to on-the-job training and experience, all of the apprentices are given at least one day of theory training each month at the Group’s dedicated training centre.

Mandy Harrison, Apprenticeship Academy Manager, commented: “We are very pleased with our latest intake of apprentices who have proved to be very enthusiastic about a career in the rail industry. We give a firm commitment to our apprentices that as much practical time as possible will be spent working on real live rail situations, and I am very happy to report that all our recruits are now out on site gaining hands-on experience with Amey Colas High Output Track Renewals and other clients at various locations nationwide.”

She continued: “There is a chronic shortage of skilled people within the rail industry and an ageing workforce which declines year on year. As an industry, we have to address this by creating training opportunities that encourage and excite young people to consider a career in rail and then make a real go of it.”

Auctus, which was founded in 2012 with help from Finance Birmingham, also has plans to begin offering a traineeship programme in 2015, which will act as one of the progression routes into the company’s apprenticeship scheme.
“We are looking to build on the success of the apprenticeship programme with a 12-week traineeship for young people and hope to start recruiting in the New Year. The traineeships will help identify those interested in then going on to a full-time career in rail, underpinned by relevant qualifications gained from an apprenticeship.”
