Ben Wilkins Apprenticeship Journey Case Study

My Apprenticeship Journey: Ben Wilkins

Today we are speaking to Ben Wilkins, who works as an Apprentice Web Developer at Auctus Management Group‘s Marketing department.

We’re catching up with our apprentices across the Group as part of National Apprenticeship Week to learn more about them, their progress, and their future goals.

Hello Ben Wilkins, what were you doing before you started working at Auctus Management Group?

I was working as a Multi-skilled Operative at Iceland, but I wanted to do something more marketing focused. I’d noticed a job ad for a Digital and Social Media Manager in Birmingham City’s matchday programme and thought it looked interesting. That prompted me to look for an Apprenticeship in this or a related field. A few years ago I completed work experience at Auctus Management Group, and they were aware that I was interested in this type of work. Richard Toy contacted me a couple of years ago and offered me the opportunity to study for an Apprenticeship, which I accepted.

Have you ever worked in the rail/civils sectors before working at Auctus Management Group?

No. I had previously worked in retail, and apart from my two-week work experience at Auctus Management Group, I knew very little about the sector.

What is your job role and responsibilities at Auctus Management Group?

Apprentice Web Developer is my job title in the Marketing department. This includes a wide range of duties, including website development, website management, app development, forms, workflow automation, and on-page SEO. WordPress, Elementor, Gravity Forms, Typeform, Mailchimp, and Cognito Forms, as well as Integromat for workflow automations, are among the software tools I am familiar with. It is a varied role, and no two days are the same. My apprenticeship is with The Coders Guild and is focused around software development.

What are your future plans, and how will working at Auctus Management Group help you achieve them?

My aim is too successfully complete my apprenticeship and then develop my management skills and gain a deeper understanding of the business. I am about to do my PTS which will mean I can do some shifts on track, gain experience and hopefully become a ‘white hat’. With that under my belt it would mean I can go to a worksite without a visitor permit and supervision to film or photograph a project that is in progress.

Thanks to Ben for taking some time to tell us about his apprenticeship journey so far.
